Our Mission

The Austrian Institute for Regional Studies and Spatial Planning (ÖIR) consults, supports and accompanies public and private bodies in strategic issues with a spatial context. Our scope of work covers European research projects as well as the practical applications of project development, impact analyses and communication processes at the local level.

ÖIR combines independent expertise and organizational know-how to master complex projects and processes efficiently and effectively.

We perceive our work as a contribution to the economic and social development of society. It is

  • Environmentally compatible and energy saving,
  • Carried out with respect for the cultural foundation of society,
  • Open to new developments and impulses, and
  • Sensitive to social impacts.

In our view, the challenge is to create the best possible conditions for development, while achieving a fair distribution of costs and benefits, and avoiding any undesired consequences.

Our approach to work includes

  • listening closely to clients and providing the right consulting for their needs,
  • applying our experience and not losing sight of the big picture,
  • linking knowledge from various disciplines, and
  • preparing to cope with the challenges of the future.

The ÖIR team delivers quality and creates added value for clients and their environment, often jointly with outstanding expert partners from Austria and abroad. ÖIR also acts as lead partner in consortia.

We work

  • to meet the needs of people,
  • with respect for the cultural foundation of society
  • responsibly vis-à-vis the environment
  • to implement social components in a spatial context
  • to achieve the smooth interaction among the various user groups and the spatial components.

We are a team

  • open to all sides when tackling new tasks and themes,
  • that is constantly searching for innovative solutions,
  • with a forward-looking approach to help avoid undesired consequences and strengthen positive effects.

In our opinion, spatial planning

  • is a field that must viewed in a global context,
  • is an instrument to create the best possible conditions for human development,
  • helps to fairly distribute costs and benefits, and
  • secures the ecological and economic sustainability of development strategies.
